Primary motto of this design is to prevent train/tram accidents. Accidentally, people might trip off on the track when there is a train behind, and conventional tracks cannot save the person all the time. But this track design facilitated U-shaped bend which can accommodate a person very easily. So if you accidentally fell on the track, you are safe even though train passes over you.
